From "LOD" to Level of Information Need

Molio Konferencen: From "LOD" to Level of Information Need

What is your presentation about and why is it important?

The presentation wants to explain the current issues in managing "LODs" and to present the work that is going on at European level on the standardisation of this topic.

Despite what many people think, the ‘LOD’ is a complex concept that requires a deep knowledge in order to improve the entire workflow and avoid later claims. When I speak about LOD, also called 'Information Levels' in Denmark, most people think it is clear and simple. However, when I start asking 'What do you mean with Information level e.g. 3 for a wall? Is the definition univocal? How can you verify and validate it? Does LOD stand for Level of Development, Detail, Definition or others?', then professionals start re-thinking about it and they admit it is not easy.

As part of out daily work, we want to improve not only the technology side, but also requirements and process! It is the reason why this topic is so relevant!

What do you expect participants to get out of it (why should they come and listen?)?

I expect them to:

  1. Increase Awareness on the complexity of the ‘LOD’ topic
  2. Understand how to improve the use of ‘LOD’ in everyday projects
  3. Learn the difference between the main terms and concepts associated to ‘LOD’ at national and international level

Why is this new knowledge important/useful to them?

This topic deals with information definition of everyday activities. It is important for employers to define requirements (I used 'employers' and not 'clients' as each actor can be an employer for others e.g. a contractor is the employer for the subcontractor etc) in a clear an unumbiguous way in order to improve the information management and avoid misunderstandings and claims.

The curent way of defining and managing LOD is not effective. In my session we will discuss how to bring new thinking.

If you are a BIM expert, BIM Manager, BIM Coordinator, BIM lover, you should come to discover the future of LOD!
